Drink Enough Water: Simple Signs Your Body May Be Dehydrated

Water is a key part of the body. It helps regulate temperature, carries nutrients and keeps your body's systems working normally. In Thailand, where it's hot almost all year, drinking enough water is especially important.

How much water should you drink a day?

How much water you need varies from person to person, depending on body weight, climate and activity. People who exercise, work outdoors or sweat a lot need more than usual. The simplest approach is to drink regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you're very thirsty.

Signs your body may be short of water

  • Dark urine, or passing less urine than usual
  • Dry mouth and throat, frequent thirst
  • Tiredness, headache or poor concentration
  • Dizziness when standing up quickly

Urine colour is an easy guide: pale, clear yellow means your body is getting enough water.

Tips to make drinking water a habit

  • Drink a glass of water after waking up
  • Carry a water bottle and keep a glass on your desk
  • Drink water before and after meals
  • Choose plain water over sugary drinks, soda or sweet iced tea
  • Eat water-rich fruit and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber and oranges
Caution
People with kidney or heart disease, or those advised to limit fluids, should drink water as recommended by their doctor.
